How are Today's Culture Wars Different?
Join HxA at Virginia Tech for their next Sunday Salon on today's culture wars. These events feature curated conversations on topics connected to higher education that revolve around selected readings ranging in topic, focus, and viewpoints. In keeping with the general theme of HxA, most of our readings will consider divergent viewpoints on a particular topic.
Readings for this months's Salon can be downloaded here:
- 1987_Allan Bloom, "Our Virtue" in The Closing of the American Mind (Simon and Schuster, 2012), 25-47
- 1993_Jean Bethke Elshtain, "The Politics of Difference" in Democracy on Trial (Basic Books, 1993), 65-91
- Christopher Lasch, "academic pseudo-radicalism: The Charade of 'Subversion'" in The Revolt of the Elites and the Betrayal of Democracy (Norton, 1995), 176-197
Given the fact that the salons are hosted in private homes and food is provided, please make sure you RSVP to Austin Council at adc@vt.edu so we can expect you. Do feel free to bring a +1, friend, spouse, or colleague, just let us know how many you'll be!
